Oral Surgeons and Wisdom Teeth – Prepare for Your Extraction

dca-blog_oral-surgery-three-people

If your wisdom tooth is deeply impacted within your jaw or has grown into a position that makes it difficult to remove, your dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon. After reviewing your x-rays and history, your oral surgeon will discuss the details of the wisdom tooth extraction procedure, and answer any questions you may have. By the end of the visit, you should know how long the procedure will take, what type of anesthesia will be used, and what you can expect before, during and after the surgery. Oral surgeons almost always perform a wisdom tooth extraction on an outpatient basis.

Preparing for Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Your oral surgeon will give you a list of instructions that detail what you should do before and after the surgery. Follow these carefully to ensure the best results. In most cases, you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the clinic on your surgery date. Be sure to ask your surgeon if it is safe to take your prescription and over-the-counter medications before surgery. If you are receiving anesthesia or IV sedation, you may need to avoid eating and drinking before the procedure.

The Extraction Procedure

During wisdom tooth extraction, your oral surgeon will make an incision into your gum tissue to expose the tooth. Bones blocking access to the tooth may be removed. If necessary, the tooth will be divided into pieces to make it easier to extract. Once the tooth is removed from its socket, the surgeon will clean the area, and stitch the wound closed if needed.

What to Do After Surgery

Most oral surgeons suggest the following guidelines for post-surgical, at-home care.

  • Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day after your surgery.
  • Don’t brush, floss, or use mouthwash.
  • Avoid using a straw for at least a week.
  • Eat only soft foods until you can tolerate a normal diet.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco for at least a week.
  • Take your pain medicine as directed.
  • Minor bleeding is expected. Replace gauze pads as instructed by your oral surgeon.

When to Call Your Surgeon

Minor discomfort and swelling are normal after surgery. Call your dentist or surgeon if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, lasting numbness, bleeding from your nose or fever.
