1. Endosteal—or “in the bone”—implants are more commonly used than other options, and they are comprised of blades, cylinders, or screws that are placed directly into your jawbone. Each implant has the ability to secure at least one artificial tooth, and it is possible to replace a large number of missing teeth all at once. These implants are popular alternatives for people who have previously worn bridges or conventional dentures.

2. Subperiosteal implants are set atop the jaw rather than into it, allowing the posts to protrude through gums to grab hold of the artificial tooth. These are the best dental implants for individuals who for one reason or another cannot wear traditional dentures and who lack the bone height necessary for endosteal applications.

An ideal candidate for dental implants is someone who is healthy in a general sense as well as in terms of their oral health. Sufficient bone material must also be present in order to provide necessary support for the dental implant itself. Healthy gum tissue that shows no sign of periodontal disease is also essential.

The dental implant procedure is different for everyone and is the result of coordinated collaboration between patient, dentist, and periodontist, who will determine the best dental implants for each individual. Depending on the extent of the work required, additional procedures such as ridge modification and sinus augmentation may be necessary.

Once implants are fully in place, they require much the same dental care and maintenance as natural teeth. Brushing and flossing must continue on a normal schedule and routine dental visits are a must. In addition, specialized examinations will be scheduled periodically to ensure the integrity and longevity of the implants.
