The Comprehensive Dental Care Routine

Tooth Brushing

As you age, habits like brushing and flossing become so second nature that you barely think about the act itself—it’s just part of your daily dental care routine. Sometimes when habits become so routine, it’s easy to just go through the motions and miss important aspects of the habit. Friendly reminders on proper dental care techniques can help get you get back to the basics and ensure you are not just “going through the motions.” Optimal dental care begins with thorough twice-daily brushing, once-daily flossing, and continues with healthy habits like a balanced diet and routine visits to an affordable dentist in Baltimore. Use this guide as your reminder for a comprehensive dental care routine.

The following techniques are recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA) to maximize your dental care regimen and oral health outcomes:

  • Brush often. Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes. If you are able, brush after every meal to minimize bacteria and acid formation that contributes to tooth decay.
  • Floss daily. There are places that your toothbrush simply can’t reach, making flossing an essential part of any healthy dental care routine.
  • The sequence of dental care. You can brush before you floss or floss before you brush.
  • Selecting a toothpaste. You have lots of choices when it comes to toothpaste. Be sure to choose a brand that is approved by the ADA.
  • Choosing a toothbrush. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits comfortably in your mouth. Many family dentistry experts recommend electric or battery-operated toothbrushes, which reduce plaque and gingivitis better than manual brushing.
  • Correct technique. Divide your mouth in quadrants and brush each area for 30 seconds, cleaning the outside, inside, and bottom of the teeth in each quadrant. Angle your toothbrush slightly and brush with gentle short back-and-forth motions. Remember to brush your tongue, too.
  • Clean your dental care tools. Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly with water after each brushing and store in an upright position. Allow the toothbrush to air-dry when possible before your next use. Avoid covering or storing your toothbrush in a closed container, which can breed bacteria.
  • Replace your toothbrush regularly. Whether you use a manual or electric toothbrush, it should be replaced every three months or when the bristles become worn—whichever comes first.
  • Rinse with mouthwash after brushing. Use a mouthwash to wash away bacteria and germs that might remain in the mouth after brushing and flossing.
  • See your family dentistry practitioner. Schedule routine visits to an affordable dentist in Baltimore every six months.
