Are Dental Implants the Right Solution for Your Missing Teeth?

If you’re looking for a way to replace missing teeth and restore your self-confidence, dental implants may be your answer. An implant consists of a titanium screw that is inserted into your jawbone, a small extension to serve as a base, and a custom-made crown that looks just like a natural tooth. Implants will never slip, make noise, or fit improperly like dentures. The phases of dental implant surgery may take as long as six to nine months, but once completed successfully, the best dental implants can last for decades.

The 6 Stages of Dental Implant Restoration

  1. If required, damaged teeth are removed.
  2. The jawbone is prepared.
  3. The implant metal post is placed into your jaw.
  4. The jaw is allowed to heal and fuse to the implant for several months.
  5. An extension called an abutment is attached to the implant.
  6. The new artificial tooth is completed with a crown.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants? A good candidate for implants has healthy jawbone available in the area where each implant is needed. Bone grafts may be an option for those who don’t. Healthy gums and good general health are also preferable.

Are There Any Risks with Dental Implant Surgery? The surgery poses minor risks of infection, damage to teeth or blood vessels, nerve damage, and sinus problems, but most complications are easily treated.

What is the Preparation Required for Surgery? Before your surgery, your dentist will take x-rays and make models of your teeth or mouth. After a thorough evaluation, a treatment plan is made, and you’ll have the opportunity to discuss pain control and anesthesia options with your dentist.

What If Many Teeth Need to Be Replaced? Multiple individual implants are one option, but full or partial implant dentures may be a more practical choice. Both fixed and removable implant dentures can be anchored to your jawbone by an implant.

What Can Be Expected After Dental Implant Surgery? Facial swelling, bruising, pain, and bleeding may occur after surgery. Pain medicines or antibiotics may be required. You’ll probably have to eat a soft diet for a week or two while you heal. For the best long-term results, get regular dental check-ups, and practice excellent oral hygiene.
